Help Others
Many people make the decision to be an organ and tissue donor during their lifetime often when getting or renewing their driver’s license or by registering online.
This decision is a powerful act of generosity. It allows individuals to give the gift of life and healing to others, even after they are gone. Just as importantly, it provides clarity and comfort to families, helping them feel confident they are honoring their loved one’s wishes.
Care Always Comes First
Donation is only considered after every possible lifesaving effort has been made. This may occur when brain death has been declared, or when a family has made the difficult decision to withdraw life-sustaining support and death is expected.
Doctors and hospital teams are focused entirely on saving the patient’s life. The healthcare team caring for the patient is completely separate from the donation team.
This ensures that every patient receives the highest level of care, with donation only becoming an option
at the appropriate time.
When the Hospital Reaches Out
If donation may be possible, the hospital contacts Southern Legacy of Life.
Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond. We work alongside hospital staff to review the situation and begin providing support, always with sensitivity and respect for what the family is experiencing.
Understanding How Someone Can Help
For organ donation, SLL coordinates with transplant centers and national allocation systems to match each organ with the patients in greatest need.
For tissue, eye, and birth tissue donation, we work with accredited partners who help ensure every gift goes where it’s needed most.
Walking With Families
If donation is possible, we meet with the family to gently guide them through the process. These conversations are handled with care, compassion, and respect. We take time to answer questions, explain what to expect, and support families in making informed decisions. If their loved one had already registered as a donor, we work to honor that decision while continuing to care for the family throughout the process. Families are never rushed and are always treated with empathy and understanding.
Connecting Gifts to Those in Need
When donation moves forward, we help ensure each gift reaches someone who needs it most. Organs are matched with patients waiting for a transplant through a national system designed to be fair and based on medical need. Tissue, eye, and birth tissue donations are shared through trusted partners to help people heal, recover, and improve their quality of life. This is where one person’s generosity becomes life changing for others.
